Branches and distribution of the vertebral arteries

The intra-cranial part of each vertebral artery usually gives rise to five arteries followed caudo-cranially:

Branch Distribution
The posterior spinal artery
  1. The spinal cord
  2. Posterior aspect of the medulla
  3. The caudal and dorsal portions of the inferior cerebellar peduncle.

The anterior spinal artery

The two usually unite to form the single anterior spinal artery that supplies:

  1. Anterior two thirds of the spinal cord.
  2. A paramedian region of the medulla oblangata
The posterior inferior cerebellar artery
  • Lateral medullary region
The posterior meningeal artery
  • Meninges of the ventral parts of the posterior cranial fossa.
Bulbar branches of the vertebral artery
  • Ventral parts of the medulla oblangata.
